Emergency Lighting Testing

Planned inspection and testing for emergency lighting systems across commercial premises, public-sector buildings and multi-site estates.

Clear evidence that your emergency lighting has been assessed

FELCO provides emergency lighting testing to help facilities teams and responsible organisations understand the condition of their systems, maintain clearer records and address identified defects.

Emergency lighting is designed to support safe movement through a building when the normal lighting supply is interrupted. For the system to remain dependable, fittings, batteries, controls and supporting components need to be inspected and tested at appropriate intervals.

FELCO works with businesses, facilities management providers, estates teams and public-sector organisations to coordinate emergency lighting inspections across individual properties and wider portfolios.

Our service connects testing with practical follow-up. We record the outcome of the inspection, provide relevant documentation and can complete remedial work where faults, damaged fittings or other concerns are identified.

Commercial emergency lighting testing

Emergency lighting testing should provide a clear picture of system condition without creating unnecessary disruption inside the building.

Commercial and public-sector premises can contain emergency lighting across escape routes, stairwells, corridors, communal areas, plant rooms and other spaces that may need to remain accessible throughout the working day.

FELCO coordinates testing with the nominated site contact so that building access, operational restrictions and sensitive areas can be considered in advance. Where testing affects normal lighting conditions or building users, suitable arrangements can be agreed before the work begins.

Our engineers inspect the emergency lighting included within the agreed scope, complete the relevant testing and record any issues identified. This gives facilities teams clearer information about the performance of the system and the action that may be required.

01

Review the system and testing requirements

The first stage is to understand the building, the emergency lighting installed and any available maintenance or testing records. FELCO confirms which areas and fittings are included, how the building is occupied and whether any access restrictions may affect the inspection. Existing drawings, asset lists, logbooks and previous reports can also be reviewed where available. For larger buildings or multi-site estates, testing may be arranged as part of a phased programme. This allows visits to be coordinated around operational priorities and helps facilities teams maintain a clearer overview of progress across each location.

Inspect and test the emergency lighting

During the visit, the engineer visually inspects the emergency lighting system and completes the testing included within the agreed scope. The work may include checking fittings for visible damage, assessing indicator lights, confirming that luminaires operate when the normal supply is interrupted and reviewing whether emergency lighting remains operational for the relevant test period. Any inaccessible fittings, operational limitations or concerns affecting the inspection are recorded. Where a defect is identified, the engineer can explain the nature of the issue and whether further investigation or repair is required.

Provide certification and progress remedial work

Following completion, FELCO provides records covering the testing carried out and the findings identified. Where required, the client can receive a commercial emergency lighting certificate or supporting test documentation for their property records. Any limitations, failed fittings or recommended further work are clearly recorded so that the facilities team understands what remains outstanding. FELCO can also complete emergency lighting repairs, replacements and further investigation. Connecting testing and remedial work through one contractor helps clients retain clearer oversight from the original inspection through to completion.

Emergency lighting testing in occupied buildings

Testing needs to be carefully coordinated when the premises remain open, occupied and operational.

Emergency lighting is often installed in areas used continuously throughout the day. These may include busy corridors, reception areas, stairways, shared facilities and routes used by employees, visitors or members of the public.

FELCO works with site teams to agree how the inspection will be managed and whether any areas need to be tested in stages. This helps reduce disruption and allows building users to be informed where normal lighting conditions may be temporarily affected.

Where access cannot be obtained or operational restrictions prevent a fitting from being tested, this is recorded clearly so that the outstanding area can be reviewed at a later stage.
