PAT Testing

Organised portable appliance testing for commercial premises, public-sector buildings and organisations responsible for equipment across multiple locations.

Clear, practical testing for workplace electrical equipment

FELCO provides PAT testing to help organisations monitor the condition of portable electrical equipment and maintain clearer safety records across their buildings.

Portable electrical appliances are used throughout commercial and public-sector environments, from offices and communal areas to workshops, kitchens, classrooms and operational spaces.

Over time, equipment can become damaged, worn or unsuitable for continued use. Regular visual checks and electrical testing can help identify defects before they create a greater risk to employees, visitors, customers or service users.

FELCO delivers commercial PAT testing as a standalone service or as part of a wider electrical testing and compliance programme. Visits can be coordinated around the building, the equipment in use and the reporting requirements of the facilities or estates team.

Tested, recorded and easier to manage

Commercial PAT testing for occupied workplaces

PAT testing needs to be completed thoroughly without creating unnecessary disruption across the working environment.

Commercial properties may contain large numbers of appliances spread across different departments, floors or buildings. Some equipment may be used continuously, while other items may be stored, moved between locations or only available at certain times.

FELCO works with the nominated site contact to understand how equipment is arranged and when different areas can be accessed. Testing can then be planned around normal operations, staff availability and any sensitive working environments.

Our engineers carry out visual inspections and relevant electrical tests, recording the outcome for each item included within the agreed scope. Where equipment shows signs of damage or does not pass the test, this is clearly identified and communicated to the client.

01

Confirm the scope and equipment locations

The first stage is to establish which buildings, areas and types of equipment are included within the testing programme. FELCO can work from an existing asset list where one is available or help the client identify equipment during the visit. We also confirm access arrangements, operational restrictions and any items that may need to remain in use until an agreed testing time. For larger premises or multi-site estates, visits can be grouped by location, department or operational priority. This helps create a more structured programme and makes progress easier to monitor.

Inspect and test portable appliances

Each item included within the scope is visually inspected for signs of damage, wear or unsuitable use. Appropriate electrical tests are then completed based on the type of equipment and its construction. The inspection may consider the plug, flexible cable, casing and other accessible components. Any obvious damage, exposed conductors, unsuitable repairs or other concerns are recorded. Where an appliance cannot be tested because it is inaccessible, in constant use or outside the agreed scope, this can be noted so that the client has a clearer understanding of any outstanding items.

Record results and highlight required action

Once testing is complete, FELCO provides records showing the equipment assessed and the outcome of the inspection. Items that do not pass can be clearly labelled or separated in accordance with the agreed site process. The relevant contact is informed so that the organisation can decide whether the equipment should be repaired, replaced or removed from use. Clear records help facilities and estates teams review completed testing, manage outstanding items and plan future programmes across individual properties or wider estates.

PAT testing across multiple sites

A consistent testing process makes portable appliance records easier to manage across a wider property portfolio.

Organisations responsible for several buildings may have different equipment types, asset lists and testing histories at each location. Without a coordinated approach, it can become difficult to confirm what has been inspected and which items remain outstanding.

FELCO can arrange commercial PAT testing across multiple sites through a planned programme of visits. Testing can be scheduled by geographical area, building priority or operational availability.

Using a consistent approach to equipment identification, testing and reporting helps estates teams maintain better visibility across the portfolio. It can also highlight recurring equipment issues and inconsistencies between individual site records.
